an open message to my fellow cartoonists
For your consideration, Planet Earth (and other tourist traps) is eligible for Outstanding Gaming Comic, Outstanding Gag Comic, and Outstanding Superhero/Action Comic. Outstanding Gaming Comic Last year, of the four comics that were nominated for "Best Gaming Comic" only one seemed to have anything to do with gaming. One was about characters inside a video game who weren't actually playing a game; one was about two guys who purportedly played videogames but don't seem to play games; another was about characters inside different role-playing game settings; and yet another was about office workers who, at times, played computer and video games. The one that featured cast members actually gaming didn't win "Best Gaming Comic." In the past year, Planet Earth (and other tourist traps) has had two storylines involving gaming: games, people who game, and the games they play. The first one, the d8 storyline, ran for three weeks. The Superhero RPG storyine ran for a week. If you want to count a week of strips centering around a computer game, that's five weeks of actual gaming found in this past year's Planet Earth (and other tourist traps), which is about five weeks of gaming more than the winner and runner-up of 2002's "Best Gaming Comic". Outstanding Gag Comic Planet Earth (and other tourist traps) is published five times a week, in (usually) four-panel gag-a-day format. Outstanding Superhero/Action Comic Super-powered people exist in the world of Planet Earth (and other tourist traps), much the same way police and firefighters exist in ours. A four-week storyline focused on villians -- Ainsley (aka Ice Queen) and her henchmen. The current nine to sixteen-week storyline centers around a hero, his sidekick, and a group of heroes. Last year, there were some good nominations, but most seem to be of the Superman, Batman, and X-Men variety of superhero books; they're about the heroes themselves. PE(aott) is closer to Astro City in that regard; it's about people in a world where superheroes exist. So, for your consideration voting members: Planet Earth (and other tourist traps) -- Outstanding Gaming Comic, Outstanding Superhero/Action Comic, and Outstanding Gag Comic in the 2003 Web Cartoonist's Choice Awards.
