2003 Web Cartoonist's Choice Awards
And now, my votes for the 2003 Web Cartoonist's Choice Awards. I didn't vote in any category where I didn't feel like I've read a representative sample of the work, so no votes from me for Long Form, Character Development, or Romantic Comic.

Outstanding Comic:
Nowhere Girl (www.nowheregirl.com)

Outstanding Art:
Demonology 101 (faith.rydia.net)
Chopping Block (www.choppingblock.org) was really close.
Megatokyo (www.megatokyo.com) and Scary-Go-Round (www.scarygoround.com) tied for a close third.

Outstanding Original Digital Art:
Scary-Go-Round (www.scarygoround.com)
8-Bit Theatre (www.nuklearpower.com) is on the list? Must be the backgrounds everyone's ga-ga over. Scary-Go-Round's artwork is more innovative than pretty much every other contender for this award.

Outstanding Use of Flash:
Outside The Box (www.moderntales.com/series2.php?name=box&view=current) -- just damn well done.
It was between that and Vicious Souvenirs (www.moderntales.com/series2.php?name=vs&view=current), but VS seemed to use moving panels for the sake of moving panels. OTB's usage of them enforced the story rather than detracted from it.
I was surprised to see Homestar Runner (www.homestarrunner.com) on the ballot.

Outstanding Use of the Infinite Canvas:
When I Am King (www.demian5.com) gets the vote by default. It was finished a year ago, so I don't know if it should have been eligible. The other works nominated seemed to simply be strips that were so large, you'd have to scroll down to see the whole thing. Nothing that really plays with the browser as a moving window, like the strip I did where Moriarty fell from the jet and Glory swooped up from below the monitor screen. (I'm really proud of that strip.) I don't know -- perhaps some of the ones nominated for this award were like PE(aott) -- occasional uses of the infinite canvas, but someone examining a small handful of strips probably won't come across those strips.
Two of the strips nominated for this award are at ModernTales.com, which only shows the most recent strip to non-subscribers. Both of the current strips don't demonstrate using the infinite canvas.

Outstanding Website Design:
Nowhere Girl (www.nowheregirl.com)
The other four look like pretty much any other well-designed site. NG's design is simply... better.

Outstanding Black and White Art:
Demonology 101 (faith.rydia.net)
Strange. This list is about the same as the Outstanding Art category.

Outstanding Environment Design:
Scary-Go-Round (www.scarygoround.com)
Makeshift Miracle (www.makeshiftmiracle.com) was very close here.

Outstanding Line Art:
Whoa. This was a difficult category. Strings of Fate (www.stringsoffate.com) gets my vote. I keep going between that, Penny Arcade, and Sinfest.

Outstanding Use of Color:
Cascadia (cascadia.verunne.net) -- the lastest stuff looks really, really, really cool.

Outstanding Short Form Comic:
PvP (www.pvponline.com)
Penny Arcade (www.penny-arcade.com) might be a contender. Same with Chopping Block (www.choppingblock.org).

Outstanding Story Concept:
I'm not sure if I understand this category. Megatokyo's story concept was two guys trapped in Japan. RPG World is a strip about video games. It's Walky was secret agents fighting aliens. Faans, from what I read of it, is about relationships. Return To Sender (tourniquet.rydia.net/sender) is about a mailslot in a wall. And monsters. And stuff. So it gets my vote.

Outstanding Gaming Comic:
PvP (www.pvponline.com). They actually play games.
Don't get me started
.
Outstanding Gag Comic:
PvP (www.pvponline.com).
Penny Arcade (www.penny-arcade.com) might be a contender. Same with Chopping Block (www.choppingblock.org).

Outstanding Science-Fiction Comic:
It's Walky! (www.itswalky.com)

Outstanding Superhero/Action Comic:
Gaming Guardians (www.gamingguardians.com)
Supermegatopia (www.supermegatopia.com) was a close second. I wanted to vote for Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki (www.montroseacademy.com), just because of the name.

So my big winners this year -- Nowhere Girl (www.nowheregirl.com) and Scary-Go-Round (www.scarygoround.com), which is strange because I don't like Scary-Go-Round all that much. It does a great job with an innovative art style, but -- personal opinion here -- I don't like the art style. Even though I don't like his particular art style, that doesn't stop me from recognizing John Allison's work as something that is very, very good.

Wow...I think I'm the one responsible for Thomas reading Demonology 101 and Cascadia! It's always nice to bring up an online comic to somebody and then learn that they actually really read it. ^_^

When I Am King is pretty funny. Wrong, but funny.
